“CrissCross” | A Major Motion Picture Filmed in Key West

Damian Vantriglia, aka, “The Lizard King of Key West🦎” landed a leading role as “Buggs” in the major motion picture film “CrissCross,” a Key West movie starring @GoldieHawn and filmed on location here in Key West! Damian was impressive to the movie producers and the casting director with his lizard tricks. What Damian did was clamp lizards onto his ears and nose - where they’d hang obediently. “I just put them to sleep, I don’t harm them,” Damian explained. Damian would catch the friendly geckos and pet them gently to sleep. Sometimes he would keep one for a day in his terrarium, feeding it “Vitafly,” nutritious freeze dried flies. In the film, Goldie Hawn delivers a moving portrayal as a poor, single mother left to raise her young son in a seedy Key West neighborhood after her troubled, Vietnam vet, husband leaves the family to take up residence at a monastery. When Tracy reluctantly resorts to dancing at a strip club to make more money, Chris begins to take on odd jobs to help her out. Unfortunately, his work transporting freshly caught fish leads to unforeseen trouble for Chris and his struggling mother. Damian is pleased to become a member of TEAM KAUFELT with Truman & Co., Real Estate Services selling property in Key West and the Lower Florida Keys. Born and Raised in Key West, Damian has a strong appreciation of the island and its amazing community. Damian's community involvement includes: Support Keys Schools, Take Stock in Children, Monroe Computes, Monroe Association for ReMarcable Citizens, Bahama Village Music Program, Reef Relief, and many others.
An avid boater, Damian is passionate about his island home - its past, present, and future. "I look forward to sharing the best that the Florida Keys has to offer, while assisting you to achieve your Real Estate goals."

Key West Writers and Their Houses

Did You Know?!

key west authorKey West KaufeltLynn Kaufelt

Lynn Mitsuko Kaufelt is more than just a REALTOR, she is a published writer alongside her husband, David Kaufelt; a @NYTimes bestselling author.

They moved from NY to Key West where they discovered the island as a haven for prominent authors seeking inspiration, comfort, and creative exploration. To name a few, these writers include Ernest Hemingway, Elizabeth Bishop, Tennessee Williams, and Robert Frost.

What Lynn and David found were that these writers came to Key West for many reasons. For the historic architecture; Bahamian, Cigar Cottages, Shotgun, Queen Anne, Spanish Colonial. For the lawless tradition. Key West has a long history of pirates and laws being broken for “Florida snow” (cocaine) and “Square grouper” (bales of marijuana). To live cheek by jowl knowing they’ll run into each other at the supermarket or at a usual sit in their favorite bar. For the curious mix of people. Key West has always been known for its eccentrics and being home to the very rich and very poor.By collaborating with her literary friends and connections throughout the writer’s community, and with Lynn’s keen interest in historical houses, “Key West Writers and Their Houses” came to fruition.

Her book delves into the significance of the writers' Key West homes. She provides descriptions of the architecture, interior design, and historical context of these houses. For instance, the Hemingway House is a Spanish colonial-style mansion with lush gardens and a distinctive atmosphere. Tennessee Williams purchased an old Bahamian house situated in an unpretentious workingman’s neighborhood, equidistant from Oldtown and Casa Marina sections. Elizabeth Bishop owned a nineteenth-century house, build in the eyebrow style, with landscaping overgrown with palms and tropical shrubs. Robert Frost lived in a cottage in the Casa Marina section.

Through Lynn’s research, personally stories, and photographs, she gives you an inside look at Key West’s picturesque landscapes and architectures, vibrant cultural heritage, and thriving writing community that captivates authors from around the world. Lynn is a woman of many skillsets which includes being a novelist.

The Peter Pan Theory | Key West, Florida

Key West Peter Pan Theory by David Kaufelt

The Key West “Peter Pan Theory by David Kaufelt” is a fascinating concept that challenges our conventional notions of adulthood and aging. The theory, inspired by the classic children’s story of Peter Pan, argues that our obsession with growing up and becoming responsible adults is not only unnatural but also counterproductive to our well-being. According to the theory, the pressure to grow up and leave behind our carefree, childlike nature leads to stress, anxiety, and unhappiness. Instead, we should embrace our inner child and enjoy the simple pleasures of life.
The concept of The Peter Pan Theory by David Kaufelt is inspired by J.M. Barrie’s classic children’s book, “Peter Pan.” The story of a boy who refuses to grow up and instead lives in a magical world of adventure and fantasy has captured the imagination of generations of readers. David Kaufelt, a renowned author and playwright, was particularly drawn to the character of Peter Pan and embraced his inner creativity and youthful self by refusing to conform to society’s expectations.

Taking a step back and listening to David’s words will allow one to realize:
• Childhood is not something to be left behind but something to be cherished and celebrated throughout life.
• The pressures of adulthood are largely artificial and create unnecessary stress and anxiety.
• Embracing our inner child can lead to greater happiness and a more fulfilling life.
• Society should place less emphasis on productivity and more on creativity, playfulness, and imagination.
Ultimately, the goal of this theory is to help us lead a happier, more fulfilling life. In Key West, the magical “Peter Pan” island, this theory is alive and well. People truly come here to be happy and to put differences aside.

Welcome to our island. Welcome to our own version of “Neverland.”

Love Where You Live,
Team Kaufelt

Historic Key West Commercial Real Estate: The Coffee Mill

Locals and tourists alike know this landmark property located just off Truman Avenue as The Coffee Mill. Built prior to 1907, the property was home to an active coffee bean processing plant until the 1950’s. In recent years, the building was famously home to one of Key West’s most popular dance studios.

The current owners have done extensive renovations to update the space to today’s standards while maintaining many of the historical features of the property. Updates include a complete modernization of the electrical and plumbing systems, new central A/C and ductwork, masterful restoration of the original hardwood floors, and the construction of private treatment rooms and a business office — all while preserving the original exterior and character of the building.

The MLS listing says describes the property this way: “Features include multiple skylights, a period correct metal shingle roof, beautiful historic arched transom windows salvaged from Henry Flagler’s Casa Marina hotel, and an updated bathroom. The property is up to current building code and ADA compliant, and was awarded a Ceramic Star for historic preservation and a Certificate of Excellence by The Historic Florida Keys Foundation. The Coffee Mill has been a staple in Old Town for over 100 years and continues to be an important part of the historic district.”

Conde Nast Traveler: 10 of the Best Restaurants in Key West

First-time visitors to Key West arrive with certain expectations about what’s on the menu at restaurants, literally. While there’s certainly an abundance of seafood, frozen cocktails, and Key lime pie as far as your oversized sunnies will allow you to see, the city’s food scene is now a far more inventive one. The culinary renaissance that took over Miami several years ago has migrated to this southernmost city, where the unique cuisine draws on Caribbean and Cuban influences with a large emphasis on locally sourced ingredients.

While most restaurants are seafood-heavy (we’ve got nothing against a perfectly prepared plate of fresh hogfish, grouper, spiny lobster, or Key West pink shrimp) there are also plenty of new establishments that are serving up everything from tropical fruit-filled artisanal doughnuts to plates of tender pulled pork topped with Southern-style slaw. Of course, you can’t leave without trying a Cuban coffee, or a slice of that famous Key lime pie. So that you don’t miss any of it, from the classics to the surprises, we’ve compiled our editors’ picks of the best restaurants in Key West.

Latitudes

$$$

When your dinner plans call for a bit of romance, there are few better choices than Latitudes. Located on Sunset Key, a private island that can only be accessed by boat, your dinner at Latitudes begins with a scenic (albeit quick) boat ride to the eatery. It’s a fantastic way to set just the right mood for the rest of the evening, which is secluded enough to make you feel like the only two people on Earth. This is fine dining all the way, so do it right and order a bottle of wine to get started. As many of the ingredients are locally sourced, the menu changes often and features a number of seafood dishes like grilled lobster tail and seared grouper with coconut cracked conch salad. If you’re feeling more turf than surf, Wagyu beef is a menu staple.

El Siboney Restaurant

$$

It would be easy to walk right by El Siboney without ever giving it a second look, what with its plain red-brick facade that looks more like a post office than one of Key West’s true culinary gems. But one taste is all it takes to realize what all the fuss is about. Everything about this Cuban eatery is old-school, right down to the pictures on the menu. The whole fried fish and garlic chicken are favorites with restaurant regulars, but it’s hard to go wrong with much of anything on this menu, which includes such Cuban staples as ropa vieja and picadillo. It’s a great place for small groups, both for its easy-on-the-wallet prices and its pitchers of homemade sangria.

Glazed Donuts

$

A doughnut shop may not be the first place that pops into your head when you think of a city’s dining hotspots, but that only goes to show that you’ve never been to Glazed. What began in 2012 as a locals-only secret has morphed into a dining must for anyone visiting Key West. The secret? Husband-and-wife owners Megan and Jonathan Pidgeon take a traditional culinary approach to their creations, which is how you end up with a Key lime pie doughnut topped with torched meringue and other fresh fruit-filled delicacies like a peach blessed dossant and pineapple upside down brulée. A full coffee bar completes the experience, even if these doughnuts aren’t made for dipping.

Blue Heaven

$$

If you enjoy the laidback vibe of breaking bread in what feels like your own backyard, with live music as your soundtrack and the occasional rooster or cat strutting by your table, Blue Heaven, an ultra-romantic restaurant that’s popular with couples, will feel like, well, heaven. Whether you’re ordering off the breakfast, lunch, or dinner menu, the eclectic cuisine fuses classic techniques with Caribbean spices and Keys flavors. You’ll find lots of seafood and jerk seasoning, as well as dishes like filet mignon and pork tenderloin. Just make sure to leave some room for a slice of their famous “Mile-High” Key lime pie.

Cuban Coffee Queen

$

Cuban Coffee Queen is a lively counter-service joint with three locations (all within one square mile of each other in the heart of town), any one of which makes an ideal spot for enjoying a bit of sunshine with your morning coffee. But don’t let the name fool you: Sure, they serve one of the best cups of joe in town—break away from your same-old caffeine fix and opt for one of their classic Cuban specialties, like a café con leche—but they serve up a whole lot more. Give the pressed Cuban bread with guava and cream cheese or one of their homemade sammies a try.

Little Pearl

$$
This chic wine bar and seafood eatery offers a fun take on the nautical theme that honors the restaurant’s surroundings without overwhelming diners with chintzy pirate gear and SCUBA seats as far as the eye can see. Where it does over-deliver is with its tasting menu, where you put yourself in the hands of the chefs and let them do their thing. If you’re lucky, their “thing” will include a serving of Japanese baby back ribs with Daikon slaw.

Café Marquesa

$$$

Though it’s located just off Duval Street in the bustling heart of Key West’s historic district, Cafe Marquesa feels worlds away from it all with its lush garden that offers a bit of privacy smack dab in the main tourist drag. The 50-seat restaurant’s simple yet elegant interior is the perfect match for a menu of classic dishes that have been reinvented and elevated in the process, making for a meal that feels familiar but tastes like nothing you’ve ever had before. Don’t skip the starters, either: the restaurant’s shrimp and grits with andouille sausage and country ham makes the perfect start to any meal, and the crispy pork osso bucco is one of those stick-to-your-ribs meals that you’ll be thinking (and talking) about for months to come.

Bad Boy Burrito

$

When you’re looking for a meal on the go in Key West, you’d be hard pressed to find a better spot than this Bad Boy. Given the dearth of Mexican restaurants in the area, they could easily just serve up the basics and call it a day. But Bad Boy prides itself on crafting innovative cuisine with fresh, local, high-end ingredients, which is how you end up with dishes like the ground Kobe beef or zucchini and squash burritos. Choose from a wide array of sauces (we love the spicy sweetness of the fresh pineapple habanero), and if you can’t find a space at one of the handful of tables, take it to go and find a spot to plan an impromptu picnic.

A&B Lobster House

$$$$

Key West certainly isn’t lacking in seafood restaurants, but the A&B Lobster House is much more than that—it’s a fine dining institution that’s been serving up some of the area’s most decadent dishes since 1947. While the dining room is charming and has an upscale steakhouse feel, the wraparound balcony with perfect marina views is where you want to be. Watch the sun set and embrace the slower-paced life as you dine on customer favorites like Caribbean lobster thermidor with cremini mushrooms, grouper Oscar with crabmeat and leek mashed potatoes, or the strip steak au poivre with a gorgonzola potato gratin. In addition to an impressive wine menu, the restaurant—keeping with its timeless style—offers a full menu of classic cocktails like the Hemingway daiquiri (which seems appropriate, given where you are).

Smoked BBQ on the Water

$$

When you’re surrounded by water, it can be easy to gravitate toward a fresh helping of seafood at every meal. But the city has got some surprisingly great BBQ, too—and as the name suggests, it comes with a water view. The addictive “back country spring rolls” are a double-rolled and deep-fried mix of pork and collards served with sweet BBQ sauce and spicy mustard that will have your taste buds firing on all cylinders. While a pulled pork sandwich might sound like the most standard thing you can order, this one is anything but ordinary (it’s probably their signature rub, which they sell for you to take home, too). There’s a kid’s menu, which also makes it a great spot for the whole family. While it may put on a no-frills front with its red-and-white checked tablecloth-covered picnic tables, the food says otherwise.

Big 7 Travel: Key West is One of the Best Coastal Cities in America

Everybody loves the Florida Keys. Especially Key West, which international travel website Big 7 Travel placed in one of the top 10 spots on its annual 50 Best Coastal Towns in the United States report.

Miami made the cut, too. But Key West, which was no. 6, really captured the imagination of Big 7 Travel, which considered such factors as beach amenities, natural scenery, community atmosphere, food and drink scene, and activities. “Many consider Key West to be the best beach area in the States,” Big 7 Travel writes. “And they aren’t wrong. Countless pastel colored homes, a robust vacation atmosphere, incredible seafood, and the most gorgeous beaches in Florida definitely back up the claim. Then, below the water, you’ve got incredible vibrant coral perfect for scuba diving and crystal clear waves perfect for wading the day away. It truly is paradise on earth.” Big 7 Travel also called the Overseas Highway one of the most scenic drives in the U.S.

The writers of the Best Coastal Cities report concede that Miami, no. 28 on the list, is not exactly a “cozy beach town” but couldn’t ignore its glitzy appeal: “This vibrant Floridian hub is loaded with culture and celebrates its diversity through food, art, and entertainment. From the luxury resort hotels and fine dining spots to the cozy hole in the walls and boutique inns, Miami is a little bit of everything. And if that weren’t enough, the beaches are pristine and the nightlife is among the best in the country.” The best coastal beach town in the U.S. was Carmel-by-the-Sea in California, with Nantucket, Massachusetts; Narragansett, Rhode Island; Cape May, New Jersey and Santa Barbara, California rounding out the top 5.

A Classical Revival Eyebrow House

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and awarded the gold star for for historic renovations, 516 Elizabeth Street is the perfect example of a classical revival eyebrow house. An eyebrow house is a style of architecture, which is unique to the Florida Keys and the Caribbean Islands.

In architecture the windows of a building are often referred to as the “eyes” of the structure. Eyebrow houses got their name due to the overhanging porch roof that partially obscures the second floor windows and protects them from direct sunlight, keeping the house much cooler than it otherwise would have been.

The design had its origins in the living conditions of Key West’s sub-tropical climate. Long before electricity was available for fans or residential air conditioning had yet to be invented, this design was part of a high tech cooling system that blocked the sun and took advantage of the cool breezes from the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean.

Along with the covered windows, eyebrow houses used cooling techniques based on the knowledge that cool air settles and hot air rises. As a result, the house has features such as a raised foundation on blocks or piers to facilitate air circulating beneath the house. Eyebrow houses also have double hung windows made up of an upper and lower sash throughout the entire house. On the first floor, the lower sash of windows were opened to let cooler air into the house and on the upper floor, the upper sash of the windows opened a pathway for escaping hot air. The circulation of cooler air throughout the homes could drop the overall temperature of the building by 5 to 10 degrees.

Another element of eyebrow houses was their wide front porches. The shaded area was a great space to catch a breeze and enjoy an indoor – outdoor living style.

This was recently sold by Team Kaufelt. View the full listing here: https://www.teamkaufelt.com/homedetails/516-elizabeth-street-589000

The Key West Literary Pantheon

Celebrate the Key West Literary Pantheon

Books & Books @ The Studios of Key West honors Key West’s extraordinary literary legacy with the Key West Literary Pantheon, a frieze wrapping around the store above its bookshelves. The frieze celebrates the names of forty-four distinguished and nationally recognized authors, all of whom have lived and/or worked in our island paradise.

This amazing group includes eleven Pulitzer Prize winners (some multiple times), six National Book Award winners, and three winners of the prestigious Bollingen Poetry Prize.  These literary artists have drawn sustenance from the Key West muse which in some subtle way drew out creativity in a manner that an intellectual hot-bed like New York could not.

As James Leo Herlihy, author of Midnight Cowboy put it “The town excited …. I spent all my time exploring, walking the streets. The place was mysterious, funky, indescribably exotic. It had much of the charm of a foreign country, but you had the post office and the A&P and the phone worked, so life was easy.” John Dewey, perhaps the leading philosopher of the last century, confirmed “the mañana mood develops very easily here,” but it made words flow. William Gaddis heard it was a lazy retreat popular with artists and writers. Looking for a quiet place to finish the novel he was working on, he found the perfect shady porch to set up his rickety Olympia typewriter, completing the novel J R, a winner of the National Book Award for Fiction.

Perhaps the best explanation comes from David Kaufelt, founder of the Key West Literary Seminar: “I have a theory why we all live here.  It’s called the Peter Pan theory. Freud said that we are at our most creative when we are in our very early youth, before we’re five years old. That’s where we are here. We wear shorts, we ride bicycles, we have the water, a great symbol of the unconscious, and we’re free to be children here and let our spirits go. There’s nobody in suits and ties telling us what we have to do.”

Although our Pantheon is limited to deceased writers, there is no doubt that the Key West magic continues to this day. Among our current residents are many of equal stature: Pulitzer Prize
winners including Annie Dillard and Alison Lurie, National Book Award nominee Phyllis Rose, many members of the American Academy of Arts and Letters — including Anne Beattie, Joy Williams and Edmund White, the inestimable Laurent de Brunhoff, and Library of Congress Living Legend Judy Blume.

JetBlue adds Key West from JFK and Boston Logan to flight map

JetBlue’s seasonal nonstop service to Key West International Airport from JFK and Boston Logan also begins Feb. 11, the airline says. That service will run through April.

“This year has pushed us to find new ways of operating our business and we’ve adapted at a pace we’ve never seen before, pivoting our network in response to changing customer demand,” Scott Laurence, head of revenue and planning for JetBlue, said in a news release. “We’re continuing to play offense to bring in cash revenue and support our business recovery. These network additions help fine-tune our geography in ways that make sense in today’s market.”

Miami to Key West Named One of the 14 Best Road Trips in America by Conde Nast Traveler

Driving down the Overseas Highway from Miami to Key West feels like slowly decompressing from the world at large. (The Seven Mile Bridge will make you feel like you’re soaring over the water.) The necklace of islands strung together by this 127.5-mile road vary markedly, moving from the Upper Keys, which seem like shards of the mainland cast off into the ocean, on to the Middle and Lower Keys. The final stop is Key West, a.k.a the Conch Republic. The journey only takes four hours total (though watch for delays, as traffic accidents can block the road and make passing impossible). If you can, earmark a week to meander down and explore hidden corners at your own pace.

Where to stop: Press on through the Upper Keys, which can feel a little gimmicky thanks to an abundance of souvenir shops, and instead linger in the Middle and Lower Keys en route to Key West. Go spearfishing near Marathon with one of the local fishing charters or sunbathe in the wilderness of Bahia Honda State Park, one of the prettiest spots in the Keys. Sandy beaches are rare elsewhere on the archipelago, but you’ll find several here.

Where to eat: You’re going to want to try Key Lime Pie in its spiritual home—debates rage as to the best, but we’d start with a slice at Blue Heaven, an al fresco restaurant with a yard full of chickens—but don’t miss the chance to detour for a pizza and a pint at the No Name Pub, too. Located on a hard-to-find island where Cuban patriots staged rehearsals for the Bay of Pigs invasion, the pub’s interior is covered with currency stapled to almost every surface. Ask to borrow the staple gun if you want to add to your own.

Where to stay: Key West is surprisingly large, and much of the accommodation is clustered around the eastern edges—avoid this at all costs, as it’s a long hike from the main drag on Duval. Instead, splurge for one of the 19th-century cottages at Winslow’s Bungalows downtown.
