The culinary renaissance that took over Miami several years ago has migrated to this southernmost city, where the unique cuisine draws on Caribbean and Cuban influences with a large emphasis on locally sourced ingredients.

While most restaurants are seafood-heavy (we’ve got nothing against a perfectly prepared plate of fresh hogfish, grouper, spiny lobster, or Key West pink shrimp) there are also plenty of new establishments that are serving up everything from tropical fruit-filled artisanal doughnuts to plates of tender pulled pork topped with Southern-style slaw. Of course, you can’t leave without trying a Cuban coffee, or a slice of that famous Key lime pie. So that you don’t miss any of it, from the classics to the surprises, we’ve compiled our editors’ picks of the best restaurants in Key West.

Latitudes

When your dinner plans call for a bit of romance, there are few better choices than Latitudes. Located on Sunset Key, a private island that can only be accessed by boat, your dinner at Latitudes begins with a scenic (albeit quick) boat ride to the eatery. It’s a fantastic way to set just the right mood for the rest of the evening, which is secluded enough to make you feel like the only two people on Earth. This is fine dining all the way, so do it right and order a bottle of wine to get started. As many of the ingredients are locally sourced, the menu changes often and features a number of seafood dishes like grilled lobster tail and seared grouper with coconut cracked conch salad. If you’re feeling more turf than surf, Wagyu beef is a menu staple.

El Siboney Restaurant

It would be easy to walk right by El Siboney without ever giving it a second look, what with its plain red-brick facade that looks more like a post office than one of Key West’s true culinary gems. But one taste is all it takes to realize what all the fuss is about. Everything about this Cuban eatery is old-school, right down to the pictures on the menu. The whole fried fish and garlic chicken are favorites with restaurant regulars, but it’s hard to go wrong with much of anything on this menu, which includes such Cuban staples as ropa vieja and picadillo. It’s a great place for small groups, both for its easy-on-the-wallet prices and its pitchers of homemade sangria.

Glazed Donuts

A doughnut shop may not be the first place that pops into your head when you think of a city’s dining hotspots, but that only goes to show that you’ve never been to Glazed. What began in 2012 as a locals-only secret has morphed into a dining must for anyone visiting Key West. The secret? Husband-and-wife owners Megan and Jonathan Pidgeon take a traditional culinary approach to their creations, which is how you end up with a Key lime pie doughnut topped with torched meringue and other fresh fruit-filled delicacies like a peach blessed dossant and pineapple upside down brulée. A full coffee bar completes the experience, even if these doughnuts aren’t made for dipping.

Blue Heaven

If you enjoy the laidback vibe of breaking bread in what feels like your own backyard, with live music as your soundtrack and the occasional rooster or cat strutting by your table, Blue Heaven, an ultra-romantic restaurant that’s popular with couples, will feel like, well, heaven. Whether you’re ordering off the breakfast, lunch, or dinner menu, the eclectic cuisine fuses classic techniques with Caribbean spices and Keys flavors. You’ll find lots of seafood and jerk seasoning, as well as dishes like filet mignon and pork tenderloin. Just make sure to leave some room for a slice of their famous “Mile-High” Key lime pie.

But Bad Boy prides itself on crafting innovative cuisine with fresh, local, high-end ingredients, which is how you end up with dishes like the ground Kobe beef or zucchini and squash burritos. Choose from a wide array of sauces (we love the spicy sweetness of the fresh pineapple habanero), and if you can’t find a space at one of the handful of tables, take it to go and find a spot to plan an impromptu picnic.

Key West certainly isn’t lacking in seafood restaurants, but the A&B Lobster House is much more than that—it’s a fine dining institution that’s been serving up some of the area’s most decadent dishes since 1947. While the dining room is charming and has an upscale steakhouse feel, the wraparound balcony with perfect marina views is where you want to be. Watch the sun set and embrace the slower-paced life as you dine on customer favorites like Caribbean lobster thermidor with cremini mushrooms, grouper Oscar with crabmeat and leek mashed potatoes, or the strip steak au poivre with a gorgonzola potato gratin. In addition to an impressive wine menu, the restaurant—keeping with its timeless style—offers a full menu of classic cocktails like the Hemingway daiquiri (which seems appropriate, given where you are).

Smoked BBQ on the Water

When you’re surrounded by water, it can be easy to gravitate toward a fresh helping of seafood at every meal. But the city has got some surprisingly great BBQ, too—and as the name suggests, it comes with a water view. The addictive “back country spring rolls” are a double-rolled and deep-fried mix of pork and collards served with sweet BBQ sauce and spicy mustard that will have your taste buds firing on all cylinders. While a pulled pork sandwich might sound like the most standard thing you can order, this one is anything but ordinary (it’s probably their signature rub, which they sell for you to take home, too). There’s a kid’s menu, which also makes it a great spot for the whole family. While it may put on a no-frills front with its red-and-white checked tablecloth-covered picnic tables, the food says otherwise.

Everybody loves the Florida Keys. Especially Key West, which international travel website Big 7 Travel placed in one of the top 10 spots on its annual 50 Best Coastal Towns in the United States report.

Miami made the cut, too. But Key West, which was no. 6, really captured the imagination of Big 7 Travel, which considered such factors as beach amenities, natural scenery, community atmosphere, food and drink scene, and activities. “Many consider Key West to be the best beach area in the States,” Big 7 Travel writes. “And they aren’t wrong. Countless pastel colored homes, a robust vacation atmosphere, incredible seafood, and the most gorgeous beaches in Florida definitely back up the claim. Then, below the water, you’ve got incredible vibrant coral perfect for scuba diving and crystal clear waves perfect for wading the day away. It truly is paradise on earth.” Big 7 Travel also called the Overseas Highway one of the most scenic drives in the U.S.

The writers of the Best Coastal Cities report concede that Miami, no. 28 on the list, is not exactly a “cozy beach town” but couldn’t ignore its glitzy appeal: “This vibrant Floridian hub is loaded with culture and celebrates its diversity through food, art, and entertainment. From the luxury resort hotels and fine dining spots to the cozy hole in the walls and boutique inns, Miami is a little bit of everything. A Classical Revival Eyebrow House

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and awarded the gold star for for historic renovations, 516 Elizabeth Street is the perfect example of a classical revival eyebrow house. An eyebrow house is a style of architecture, which is unique to the Florida Keys and the Caribbean Islands.

In architecture the windows of a building are often referred to as the “eyes” of the structure. Eyebrow houses got their name due to the overhanging porch roof that partially obscures the second floor windows and protects them from direct sunlight, keeping the house much cooler than it otherwise would have been.

The design had its origins in the living conditions of Key West’s sub-tropical climate. Long before electricity was available for fans or residential air conditioning had yet to be invented, this design was part of a high tech cooling system that blocked the sun and took advantage of the cool breezes from the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean.

Along with the covered windows, eyebrow houses used cooling techniques based on the knowledge that cool air settles and hot air rises. As a result, the house has features such as a raised foundation on blocks or piers to facilitate air circulating beneath the house. Eyebrow houses also have double hung windows made up of an upper and lower sash throughout the entire house. On the first floor, the lower sash of windows were opened to let cooler air into the house and on the upper floor, the upper sash of the windows opened a pathway for escaping hot air. The circulation of cooler air throughout the homes could drop the overall temperature of the building by 5 to 10 degrees.

Another element of eyebrow houses was their wide front porches. The shaded area was a great space to catch a breeze and enjoy an indoor – outdoor living style.

Her ongoing support of The Studios since even before it’s inception makes her tops in our book, but Lynn has also worked tirelessly to support Monroe County arts and service organizations over the years. She’s been involved with Key West Literary Seminar, KWAHS, Wesley House, Take Stock in Children and the Tennessee Williams Fine Art Center, among other organizations.

Presented annually to an outstanding leader who has benefitted Key West through significant contributions to the Arts, the winner receives a striking contemporary sculpture designed by artist Helen Harrison.

Miami to Key West Named One of the 14 Best Road Trips in America by Conde Nast Traveler

Driving down the Overseas Highway from Miami to Key West feels like slowly decompressing from the world at large. (The Seven Mile Bridge will make you feel like you’re soaring over the water.) The necklace of islands strung together by this 127.5-mile road vary markedly, moving from the Upper Keys, which seem like shards of the mainland cast off into the ocean, on to the Middle and Lower Keys. The final stop is Key West, a.k.a the Conch Republic. The journey only takes four hours total (though watch for delays, as traffic accidents can block the road and make passing impossible). If you can, earmark a week to meander down and explore hidden corners at your own pace.

Where to stop: Press on through the Upper Keys, which can feel a little gimmicky thanks to an abundance of souvenir shops, and instead linger in the Middle and Lower Keys en route to Key West. Go spearfishing near Marathon with one of the local fishing charters or sunbathe in the wilderness of Bahia Honda State Park, one of the prettiest spots in the Keys. Sandy beaches are rare elsewhere on the archipelago, but you’ll find several here.

Where to eat: You’re going to want to try Key Lime Pie in its spiritual home—debates rage as to the best, but we’d start with a slice at Blue Heaven, an al fresco restaurant with a yard full of chickens—but don’t miss the chance to detour for a pizza and a pint at the No Name Pub, too. Located on a hard-to-find island where Cuban patriots staged rehearsals for the Bay of Pigs invasion, the pub’s interior is covered with currency stapled to almost every surface. Ask to borrow the staple gun if you want to add to your own.

Where to stay: Key West is surprisingly large, and much of the accommodation is clustered around the eastern edges—avoid this at all costs, as it’s a long hike from the main drag on Duval. Instead, splurge for one of the 19th-century cottages at Winslow’s Bungalows downtown.

Origination Fee – Payment to lender to evaluate your credit and underwrite and process loan.

Discount Points – Paid to lender at closing to reduce interest rate over life of mortgage.

PMI or Mortgage Insurance – Required if down payment is less than 20%. PMI protects your lender if you default on your loan.
